What is menopause?

When you cease to have a menstrual period for 12 consecutive months you most likely have entered menopause. You will cease to be able to get pregnant and your body will undergo other changes.

Gradually declining estrogen levels begin as early as in the 30’s – this is referred to as peri-menopause. Menopause usually occurs around age 51.2 when the ovaries stop producing estrogen, or surgically at any age when the ovaries are removed.

Some of the symptoms of menopause include:

  • Irregular periods
  • Hot flashes
  • Sleeplessness
  • Dry skin
  • Rapid heart beat
  • Loss of libido
  • Mood swings
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Depression
  • Osteoporosis
  • Hair loss

In the twenty-first century it will not be uncommon for women to live over one-third of their years after menopause.
